Connecting to GrassRoots

There are four ways to connect to the GrassRoots MOO. However you get there, at the GrassRoots MOO login screen,

if you are new, type: co guest

or if you have an account, type: co userid password

1. Via Web and Java client

If you use a modern graphical Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, and you don't have a specialized MOO client or are not sure how to connect, this is your best choice. You don't have to download anything; just follow the link above and you will be connected to GrassRoots. There is also an older Java client available for those who don't like or can't use the current one.

2. Straight SSH to enabling.org

This will place you in a program called TinyFugue which will give you access to GrassRoots with a split screen, the top part being for output from the MOO and the bottom part for the commands that you send to the MOO. Use this if you do not have a specialized MOO client or a Web browser and system that supports Java (such as the latest version of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer and Win9x or 2000 or xp). You can also use this method if it is easier for you to use than the other two. When using this method, if you see "---More---", press the Tab key for more.

  • If you use Windows, you will need a Windows SSH client. There are many of these, but there is a free one called Putty. You can obtain this client at the link below.

  • If you have a Unix or shell account at the command prompt type: SSH tf@enabling.org

  • When asked for a password, type: tf.

  • Other operating systems need SSH programs - see below.

3. Via a MOO client to enabling.org:8888

For a short list of MOO clients, see below.

4. If your provider has its own TinyFugue, via your shell account

At the command prompt type: tf enabling.org 8888

There are several specialized MOO clients available from the following links. The EduVR page and Tucows have a number of SSH programs and MOO clients for various operating systems and can be accessed by the following links:
