Mailing List Tutorial

The ESF Tutorial on the Use of Mailing Lists
Prepared by the Staff of GrassRoots Virtual World
October 12, 1998©

Learning to use and run a Mailing List depends entirely on your ability to send and read e-mail. A List refers to a group of people who have subscribed to the List because of a common interest. For example, ESF has created two lists for this program, esf-educ and ESF-learn.

  • esf-educ is a public list where those working on the Partnership Program can talk about what they are doing and those who are not involved in the Program can learn about it.
  • ESF-learn is a private list where only ESF staff and participants can subscribe. It will be used for learning and questions and answers.

The first thing you will learn about a list is how to subscribe and send messages.

  • Both Lists are run by the same Listserv software listserv@www.enabling org.   (Note there is no final "e" in listserv.)
  • The addresses of the Lists are esf-educ@www.enabling.org and esf-learn@www.enabling.org.
  • When you want to give a command to Listserv to subscribe, change options, or sign off a list, the mail is addressed to Listserv@www.enabling.org.
  • When you want to post a message to either lists it is addressed to    esf-educ@www.enabling.org or esf-learn@www.enabling.org

Exercises:

Part 1 Subscribing and sending messages

From your regular e-mail program, send mail to listserv@www.enabling.org  with the following message:
subscribe esf-educ Firstname Lastname
subscribe ESF-learn Firstname Lastname
review esf-educ
review ESF-learn
Depending on network traffic, you should get 4 responses from Listserv within minutes.
Answer these two questions in a message that you mail to the esf-educ list at esf-educ@www.enabling.org

  • How were the responses to the esf-educ and ESF-learn different? Why do you think?
  • What does the review command do?

If you do not understand what to do or something does not work, post that to esf-educ. If you cannot post to the list, we will establish a temporary phone help line to deal with startup problems.

Part 2 Using a list to get information

When you have decided on your name for GrassRoots, send a message to the esf-edu list and your Persona and password will be sent in the mail. You will then be ready to try the GrassRoots tutorial.
